Organization Description
Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps works in some of the world’s most challenging environments to bring lifesaving services to communities facing war, natural disaster, famine, and poverty. International Medical Corps’ approach to humanitarian aid is two-pronged – provide immediate relief while giving communities the skills they need to continue the services long into the future. Because of this, 97 percent of International Medical Corps staff is nationals from the local communities in which we work.
Since its founding, International Medical Corps has delivered more than $969 million worth of assistance to millions of people in more than 50 countries around the world. International Medical Corps has also responded to many of the most devastating emergencies in recent history, from the Southeast Asian tsunami to the crisis in Darfur and Hurricane Katrina. Today, International Medical Corps works in 25 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Indonesia, Sudan, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In its work around the world, International Medical Corps’ program priorities include:
• Emergency response
• Health capacity building
• Women’s and children’s health and well-being
• Mental health
• Water, sanitation, and hygiene
In addition to its program focuses, International Medical Corps runs programs focusing on infectious disease, like malaria and HIV/AIDS, economic livelihood, sexual and gender-based violence, and nutrition and food security. No matter the program, its mission still holds true – to provide immediate, life-saving relief and build self-reliance in underserved communities around the world.
